Discovered why I startled awake last night to a loud noise....inside my head

Last night I startled awake to a loud noise that sounded like something hitting a window.  It was so violent I startled awake in a panic and woke my husband up also.  Later I heard a bang that sounded like something hitting the head board.  My husband didn't hear either noises and I didn't either, at least not with my ears....I had ear plugs in.  This phenomenon has happened to me off and on through years.  A couple times it's been the sound like a slamming door or hearing my husbands voice loud and clear even though he was asleep.  So this morning I decided to see if there could be an explanation and I found out that there is actually a term for what has been happening to me - Exploding Head Syndrome! Sounds like something from the movie Scanners doesn't it?!! LOL!  Here is link to Wikipedia about it:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploding_head_syndrome .  EHS was first described by Welsh born psychiatrist Robert Armstrong-Jones.  So it's been around awhile.

The other thing that happened this morning is just before the alarm went off, I had a scene in my head that involved the flashing of light like from a camera.  It was like I was seeing a scene of a speeding car getting caught on camera like happens at some stoplights.  Apparently seeing flashes of light is another part of it.  Extreme stress, fatigue, seizure in the temporal lobe, the movement of the inner ear or even out of body experiences are all possible causes.  There doesn't appear to be anything to worry about with it.  Just found it interesting enough to share.

Thanks, I didn't know there was a name for it. I've experienced this for years -- voices yelling at me mostly. Since I have found dozens of funny written messages hidden in the house since he died I just figured it was Dad haunting me -- LOL.

Truly fascinating. Yes, I've had the sudden loud sound thing happen on occasion. I have to admit rather sheepishly however...once it was me snoring so loud (I had a bad cold at the time) I woke myself up.

/blush

I have chronic fatigue syndrome so I find it interesting that fatigue is thought to set them off.

Well, that was interesting. I've never heard of "exploding head syndrome". At least you now know there is a name if not a specific reason for such.

Jackie, please follow up with your doctor. It is possible that your self diagnosis is wrong and something else neurological is causing it.

Jackie, I would agree with Lee here. Although that can be tough these days, as medical tests are so expensive............I know I find myself hesitating at times too, so...........just thought I'd throw in the 2 cents. Even though I probably wouldn't take my own advice here.........yikes.

A Kara, I hear what Lee was saying but since it's happened before I'm not too worried. It happens so infrequently that I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. But I appreciate the two cents worth! :-)

I had never heard of that Jackie. I have had ear problems lately and sometimes, while awake, I think I hear music in the background.

I get that a lot but especially at night. I also have ringing in my ears and when I went to the doctor for it he told me of another person who had it so bad they actually had their eardrums permanently silenced because they were being forced to listen to what seemed to them like blaring jazz horns every day but especially at night when it was quiet and they couldn't sleep. It was literally driving them nuts so they preferred being deaf instead.

For me it's like I think I hear the television on in the living room while I'm trying to go to sleep. A bit of muffled chatter. I also hear music at times as well...very faint and luckily soft in style.

Jackie - that's interesting. I hadn't heard of that but like Vlad I hear music quite a bit - only at night though when everything else is really quiet I'll hear music playing softly - but I can't make out the song or songs. I thought maybe I was picking up radio signals - seriously. To hear a loud noise though would be frightening to me anyway.

Wow - Jackie after I wrote that this hadn't happened to me - it happened last night. At least I hope it happened and not something else. I heard a loud bang on the bedroom door and no one else was here then.
It was very disturbing to say the least.

Soovivers ---that is pretty darn freaky! What you describe is what happened/has happened to me. A door slam, a sound like something hitting a window, a voice are ones that have happened to me. The most startling thing is the door slam. Sorry that happened to you! Glad you had this info to refer to. Hopefully, like for me, it will be a very rare occurence!

I sure hope it doesn't happen much because it scared me so much I couldn't get back to sleep afterwards and that was at 2 am. I'm glad you wrote this article otherwise I would have been more shaken then I was. So you helped at least one person today and probably more from the looks of it. Thanks Jackie.

Jackie I first learned of this with my eye doctor many years ago. I was afraid something was goinjg wrong internally with my eyes because bright flashes, like a fire storm, would wake me. He explained it was a cavity wall actually in the sinuses that was so close to the eye that it appeared as a flash. I was amazed by his lengthy description; which is above already. Learn something new everyday! I am glad to see others have experienced the same thing though. Your article is the first I've ever seen discussing it. Thanks!

Well, Anna, this is getting kind of spooky. Not for me, but because my hubbie reports that whenever he gets a headache (which is very rare, according to him) that it occurs behind one of his eyes. He doesn't say much about symptoms in general, which I find scary.

I'm going to ask him about this further, if he's in the mood to talk about it, of course!!

Jackie, I believe you. I have an Exploding Head, too. I started having my Head Explode maybe 3 years ago. Mine sound metalic, like someone banging on a piece of galvanized roofing material. Lucky for me, I read an article about it on MSNBC within a couple experiences. I knew it was in my head because no one else could hear it. Sometimes I have two a night and then I will go for months without one.

It was spooky at first. Now it's kinda interesting.

I want to thank each and every one of you for stopping in - I had no idea this would generate so much interest! I'm staying at my in-laws because our car decided to have trouble yesterday....sigh. Using Mom-in-laws laptop so staying brief for now. Several of you mentioned hearing loud or faint music and I had that happen too - thought it might be paranormal but now I don't think so. The slamming, abrupt sounds are the scariest ones! There is also a condition you may have heard of called tinnitus - which oftentimes occurs after a head injury. There is a constant hum or ringing. My Aunt had it so bad that playing dominos (the clacking of the pieces) was painful for her. I hear the hum/rining too but what's funny is it changes and fluctuates. For example the hum will get louder just before my husband walks into the house or is on his way home. The hum will increase before my dog or cats come into a room. It's like hearing the electricity of thought, which I know isn't probably possible but that's what it seems like. I probably have a mild case of tinnitus too lol....ahhh to get older.

I'm not real worried about it - just glad to have a label for what has been going on! They say we humans are always trying to fill in the blanks and come up with explanations for the how and why. I'm ALWAYS doing that lol.

Actually, Jackie, I believe it IS possible. And you have described something here that I too experience. Now, I don't have exploding head syndrome, but I've always been able to "feel" in this sort of way. The electricity of thought is a very exacting way of saying what has happened to me since I was a very small child. Probable article here, although, don't worry, I won't use that terminology, or if I do, I will provide a link up to your column, and let everyone know who coined the phrase.

Wow Kara, thank you for sharing this here. You're one of the first people that has understood what I'm talking about when I explain what is happening. My husband understands also. Science would probably say that this is impossible, that the amount of electricity generated in the human thought is too low to even be detected outside of the brain. But I wonder if people who are susceptible to EMF (electro magnetic fields) and feel nausea, paranoia and other symptoms, couldn't also be sensitive to other forms of electricity such as those that would emanate from the human brain or any other living organism. I feel that all living things are connected and perhaps it is this connection that we are sensitive to. Very interesting topic. There is another article that I wrote a few months back, in which I talk about this. If you're interested, I can link the article.

Well this explains the occasional loud bang I have awakened to at night. I stopped searching the house for the cause of the disturbance a long time ago, never found a thing, and my husband never hears it. If I wake him up he goes for the shotgun :(. Because I also sometimes smell a whiff of very sweet perfume I assumed we had a ghost.

Ambivalent the Wikipedia link talks about people who have had out of body experiences talking about this phenomenon also. Who knows right?!!

The 7th of February in the morning, while I was walking my dog, I had this sudden attack of anxiety and dread...wanted to cry! That night I had the EHS experiences and the following day I read an email from my Aunt saying my Great Uncle had died. Coincidence? Very possibly but interesting. In my journey thus far I just think there are just a lot of things we can't explain...connections between the living and possibly even the dead we can't explain. Did you recognize the perfume scent?

No recognition, but a feeling that it was not of this earth. I can smell it but nobody else can - too bad for them, and it is emanating from apparently nowhere. It must be coming from my brain somehow.

Jackie, very early on, when re-reading this article actually (I didn't have much time before to explore this article and comments, and so I prefer to wait and give things a decent read), so that brings us to today...........well, I was asking myself Jackie about a psychic connection. Not necessarily to EHS, because I don't know anything about that. It also sounds so very painful. But having had a chance now to read the article thoroughly as well as all of the postings, I believe that much of this may be psychic phenomena. As in the following:

Because I also sometimes smell a whiff of very sweet perfume

This has been a fascinating re-read, and I am actually happier that I did not post the first time.........

Kara you have really added to the interesting aspects of this article. I think it's all the personal experiences that people shared here that flesh it out! Sometimes just talking about something like this or just bringing it up as something new, really triggers this kind of discussion. Many of the folks commenting here had not heard or read about the phenomenon. Many have had these types of things happen but have chalked them up to just something weird, strange or something to discount as not important. As is illustrated here, these things that have been happening to people are something shared an important to discuss. (This is the first time I've used my new Dragon voice recognition software to comment here - I like it!)

Yes ma'am! I'm still doing my own typing but I think for people in administrative positions that require extensive typing and transcribing it is a great tool. Yesterday I finished "dictating" my first journal from 1984 and now am moving on to the next one. In the past, I would get started with this project and would get exhausted from typing and just give it up. Finally I'm going to get this done. Also I have the outline of a story I wrote last year that I want to flesh out and with the software may be I'll have an easier time with writers block! The only flaws in it so far - locks up frequently and mistranslates words. When I get tired I notice this more lol...start to slur my words lol.

I wrote an article about it but see I deleted it. I can find it and repost it if your interested. It was a frustrating experience persuing trying to "find him and find out more about him" and so I just let it go.
